Cathedral Café is a small, welcoming spot nestled in the courtyard behind Exeter Cathedral, making it a natural pause for anyone exploring the historic center or visiting The Cloisters. This café leans into a casual, relaxed atmosphere where the backdrop of medieval stonework offers a quiet contrast to the bustle of the city streets just beyond.

The interior is intimate, lending itself well to a low-key coffee break or a light lunch. Seating spills outside during warmer days, providing a sunny opportunity to watch passersby while enjoying a hot drink or a simple meal. This outdoor space, set on gravel, can require some nimbleness for wheelchair users, but the staff are noted for being responsive and helpful when needed.

The crowd here tends to be a mix of locals, tourists soaking up the cathedral grounds, and regulars who appreciate the consistency of good-quality coffee and a clean environment. Food choices are limited but well-made, focusing on quality over quantity, and prices are reasonable if slightly higher than a standard café, reflecting the unique location and attentive service.

The café works well for those looking for a moment of calm, whether it’s a coffee catch-up, a spot of afternoon tea, or a light lunch with friends. The staff enjoy their role in this historic setting, providing a friendly but professional touch that visitors quickly notice. It’s not the place for a long, elaborate meal, but rather a pleasant pit stop where the surroundings are as much part of the experience as the food and drink.

While the toilets have been noted to occasionally have doors left open, this small detail reminds visitors that this is a place still grounded in everyday reality rather than polished gallery perfection. Overall, Cathedral Café offers a quietly atmospheric setting deeply tied to Exeter’s heritage — best enjoyed in good weather when the outdoor courtyard is inviting and the sunlight adds warmth to the ancient stones.

This was the first time I've been to this cafe. It's really nice there and the food is great. It is also possible to seat outside. It is a bit of a small choice when it comes to food. However, in general, I think this is a great place.

A lovely little cafe in the courtyard at the back of the cathedral. Part of the cathedral itself, it is a beautiful place to stop for a lunch or a coffee. Food is good quality and prices are reasonable but a little high on some items.

My friend and I had a lovely hot chocolate. Nice and clean. My only observation is that people visiting the toilet kept leaving the door open, we noticed this as we were sat opposite. Maybe a polite notice to customers to close the door or a self close on the door.

We love this cafe especially as the setting is so extraordinary. On Saturday the 5th of April I sat outside with a friend eating our lunch in the sunshine and realised too late that my power wheelchair had sunk into the gravel and I was truly stuck. My friend asked the lovely young staff in the cafe if they could help and this gang of cheerful and kindhearted people came out and with the help of some cardboard rescued me. If they see this review I just wanted to say how grateful I am for your kindness. Also a big thank you to the gentleman who gave up his lunch to the seagulls to come and help as well. Some great people out there. Much love!
